Various activities took place in the testbed at the IJkdijk location:

  1. Having new sensor, inspection and observation techniques tested and validated by participating companies.
  2. Conducting experiments to answer questions of water barrier managers in order to ultimately improve the inspection process.

The test dikes could be experimentally subjected to such forces that they collapsed under controlled conditions. That yields information about:

  • the suitability of sensor and communication technology for monitoring dikes;
  • the yield mechanisms and the prediction of the moment of collapse based on the measurement values provided by the sensors;
  • the yield mechanisms in relation to the structure and base of the dike;
  • the validity of current and future models for these yield mechanisms;
  • the best price/quality ratio of the systems on offer for large-scale applications;
  • technological issues in sensor and communication technology;
  • possible scenarios for the large-scale application of sensor and communication technology, both technologically and organisationally aimed at management and disaster prevention.

The IJkdijk thus generates unique insights for organisations occupied with water and water barrier management. These insights raise the effectiveness and efficiency of water management. The project also provides an ideal test facility for sensor technology developers.

The All-In-One Sensor Validation Test was the last series of tests that took place in the testbed of Stichting IJkdijk. The grounds were given back to Staatsbosbeheer at the end of 2012. Coming IJkdijk experiments will take place at other locations.
