The piping experiments at the IJkdijk location in Booneschans were held in 2009.

It is possible at high water for water to seep through at the bottom of a dike as a result of the high pressure. If this water takes sand with it, a pipe-shaped passage forms under the dike and gets bigger and bigger, placing the stability of the water barrier under threat. This can weaken the dike and, in the most extreme scenario, cause it to collapse.

This piping test was unique: it was the first time that mechanism had been simulated and monitored at this scale in a controlled setting. This was also the first time that the connection between the occurrence of piping and the actual collapse of a dike had been demonstrated.

The piping experiment showed (among other things) that a drainage pipe in the right place can prevent piping. More about these results is given in the brochure of the results
